Superman Smashes the Klan is a three issue comic book. The main characters are Roberta Lee and her brother Tommy, two Chinese American kids who have just moved to Metropolis. Superman must help the Lee’s and their parents when they are attacked by the Klan of the Fiery Cross. The Klan were a group of bigots who didn’t like people from other countries.

The theme of racism is shown by the Klan and by the nasty words said by Chuck, a boy from Tommy’s baseball team. Chuck is the nephew of the Grand Scorpion, the leader of the Klan. Superman is also trying to unlock the rest of his alien side. Superman is an immigrant Kryptionian and so has a lot in common with the Lee’s.

At the end of each issue the writer Gene Luen Yang reveals his backstory as a Chinese American. The stories about racism and the Klan made me think the world was not as nice a place as I thought it was. At the end of the story I fealt really happy that the characters were fitting into their new settlements. I would recommend this comic to everyone because it was really enjoyable.
