The plot of Robbie Burns Witch Hunter springboards off the notion that the celebrated poet, in his early days as a hapless ploughman in Ayrshire, really did encounter a coven of witches in the old Kirk by Brig O Doon, and was flung into a supernatural adventure that would shape him into much more than a romantic wordsmith.
Co-writers Gordon Rennie and Emma Beeby’s high-paced plotting plays off a number of familiar action tropes, smartly repackaged to fit the historically high-concept. Credit also goes to their sprightly script, with a use of authentic dialect that should still be accessible to non-Scots. Tiernen Trevallion’s artwork seems heavily influenced by Mike Mignola, with plenty of creeping shadows and weathered locales, populated by an eclectic cast of fantastical beasties. The end result is a cinematic romp that comes across as a crowd-pleasing blend of Kingsman and Hellboy; but with poetry.
I really can’t recommend this enough; it’s an annual read for me. See more from the official Rebellion website here!
