I recently read and greatly enjoyed the first arc of the new series ‘All-Star Batman’. Covering issues 1-5, the story was called ‘My Own Worst Enemy’, and saw Batman escorting Harvey (Twoface) Dent on a 500 mile road-trip to reach a cure for his condition, all while the highest-ever stake bounty has been placed on their heads. It’s an action-packed thriller, and plays very much like a cross between the movies ‘Dark Knight’ and ‘Midnight Run’.
The writer, Scott Snyder, has some regular flaws on show; contrived plot devices and clumsy exposition in the dialogue, but he knows the characters very well, and he writes villains brilliantly. Some really nice references across the whole Batman mythology (Bat-shark repellent!) and a break neck pace make up for the flaws, and earns this a very high recommendation, even for newcomers.
You can get more details on the series in this excellent interview with Snyder on Comics Alliance.
